This was only part a partial solution for me — I followed the directions at http://elame.com/damnthatsannoying/?p=35 and it provided the final steps I needed to get it working.

Thanks for your suggestion – fixed my Acer Aspire 5720 too. Annoying that it worked before but not by default on 9.10!!
